STRENGTH AND RESISTANCE
MALOSSI CRANKSHAFTS FOR VESPA
The Vespa crankshaft is one of the most delicate and important components of this type of engine, having to both manage the movements of the connecting rod and piston, and regulate the admission through the timing of the half-shoulder.
The Malossi technical office has focused its attention precisely on these two aspects, creating two versions of crankshaft and developing new solutions of great technical value, starting from the choice of materials, as always of the highest quality.
All Malossi crankshafts for Vespa are made of aeronautical quality casehardened steel and vacuum remelted, a material highly resistant to scratches, guaranteed by the certifications required by the very strict Malossi specifications. The "viper head" connecting rod has a shape designed to keep weight to a minimum and guarantee all the necessary rigidity.
Not even the smallest detail has been overlooked. In fact, Malossi technicians, even by intervening on the thread of the TRANSMISSION side of the crankshafts, have managed to significantly increase resistance by using a finer pitch. The position of the key has also been revised in both size and shape, so as not to damage the thread anymore and contribute to resistance in a finally cutting-edge solution. The crankshafts are supplied with special nuts, much more resistant, to exploit the greater resistance offered by the thicker thread.
ROTARY VALVE CRANKCASE SHAFT
In the version dedicated to rotary valve engines, the intake phase has been obtained inside the half-shoulder, in the circular mass structure itself, which has produced a notable slot facing inwards, while maintaining a regular external profile. This innovative choice has made it possible to obtain a unique shape capable of guaranteeing extremely effective fluid dynamics.
Such large slots have always been one of the most delicate points of Vespa crankshafts, when looking for the correct balance. Malossi has solved this problem by including inserts made of tungsten in the crankshaft and used as counterweights to increase the stability of the shaft itself.
FULL-SHOULDERED TREE
The Malossi full-shoulder crankshaft, intended solely for Vespa engines modified to use a reed valve admission system instead of the original rotary valve, is the new frontier for Vespa enthusiasts.
As with the rotary valve version, in this case too, optimal balancing is guaranteed by the wolfram inserts. In addition, the TRANSMISSION side half-shoulder has chamfers specifically designed to facilitate the entry of fresh gases into the under-crankcase.
The circular mass structure is the area that benefits most from this new shaft and crankcase configuration, receiving the maximum possible amount of pressure.
DIFFERENT VERSIONS
Crankshafts with different connecting rod lengths are available for “small frame” Vespas on which the full shoulder crankshaft will be installed.
The shaft dedicated to engines with rotary valve admission has a standard stroke and connecting rod length.
