INTAKE MANIFOLDS
The intake manifold is the access corridor of the air-fuel mixture into the engine through the port formed by the reed valve.
The total efficiency of an engine is calculated as the product of various partial efficiencies which are:
- volumetric efficiency
- thermodynamic efficiency
- mechanical efficiency
Volumetric efficiency indicates the ratio between the quantity of mixture in volume that can be introduced into the combustion chamber and the engine displacement.
One of the main factors that influences volumetric efficiency is the friction loss encountered by the incoming fluid (air-fuel mixture) from the air filter until it reaches the combustion chamber, therefore one of the components that significantly influences this loss is the intake manifold, as all the incoming mixture must pass through it with the minimum possible loss, for this reason it is absolutely necessary to avoid sudden increases in section and sharp edges along the path of the mixture.
Another function of the intake manifold is to act as a storage lung for the fresh charge, since the column of mixture travelling at a certain speed takes a certain time to stop when the reed valve closes and therefore the mixture comes to accumulate in the manifold, compressing against the reeds. For this reason each manifold has its own well-defined range of rpm within which it expresses the maximum efficiency (tuned manifold).
Furthermore, the manifold has the task of supporting the carburetor by connecting it to the engine crankcase or to the cylinder, therefore it also has, if required, the task of dampening the vibrations that are transmitted from the crankcase to the carburetor, avoiding the phenomenon of the emulsion of petrol and air in the carburetor bowl.
Therefore, this apparently simple component requires considerable study in order to fully exploit all its qualities, a result that Malossi technicians have achieved perfectly.
Malossi, drawing on its decades of experience in engine fuel systems, has created a new line of rubber and aluminium alloy manifolds for new generation scooters, tested and developed by the Malossi experience department, both on the road and on racing circuits.
In particular, Malossi rubber manifolds have a composite structure as they are built starting from an aluminium insert which is incorporated into a special plastic material which is resistant to oil and petrol, thus ensuring considerable rigidity of the fixing base to the crankcase and good elasticity of the manifold body.
